What is love about? The definition of love (in Greek) Eros, Philia, Agape, Thelema, Storge
|
The book excerpt refers to Greek words about love - Eros, Philia, Agape, Thelema, Storge (C.S. Lewis refers to these as The Four Loves):
Love is. Love is constant and everlasting. It is the unifying force of the
universe.
When you allow love to flow through your life, you feel a powerful
organic reaction in the body: deep breathing occurs, the heart expands,
and the pulse strengthens. Physically, your emotional brain triggers the
love and happiness feelings that flow through your body. In the state of
love you are infused with a divine energy or spiritual oneness, one that
permeates all existence-you are one with God.

You have a choice. Eros is a spontaneous gift that just happens, but you
choose to love. In choosing love, work deep within to keep streaming
about love. This takes work. Remember, you brain works on associative
memory relating past events and people that in turn trigger emotional
chemicals in your body-mind. This is where the work comes in, as you
start to understand your history then your history does not run you. This
is not to say you must dwell on the past; rather, you need an awareness
of where you have come from.
When you choose to jump from one partner to another, you may be
confusing the difference between love and Eros. Many times when you
are in a relationship and say, I don't love you anymore," you may really
mean, "I don't have Eros for you anymore." You learned that you were
infatuated with the ideal image of a past person, ideal, or event. You may
have gotten past the lust chemistry of your biological urges. The fact is
you never got to true love in the first place.
You may have lots of Eros and sexuality, but you are fl at and you
continually want more. You are dissatisfied because you don't have love,
so you move on.
In the world, the English language, for historical reasons, is the language
most used as the common denominator for communications. The
English language only has one word for about love. Older civilizations and other
languages have more than one word for a single English word. Eskimos,
for example, have numerous words to mean different types of the word
snow. The Hawaiians have the words "A'a" and "Pahoehoe" for the one
word lava. In the roots of the ancient Greek language there are fi ve
words that only translate to the English word love:
1. Eros
2. Philia
3. Agape
4. Thelema
5. Storge
Eros - is the sensual, spontaneous desire described above. The
spontaneous chemistry does not necessarily led to a sexual
relationship. It can be also be an appreciation for another
person or have a "more than a friend" but not necessarily a
lover connotation. There are even fi ner linguistically distinct
meanings that can be discussed beyond the scope of this
writing for Eros and the other ancient Greek words for love.
Philia - is the love "friendship" in Modern Greek. Philia is a virtue of
loyalty to friends, family, and society as a whole. It is the platonic
love-friendship of equality between people.
Agape - means love in modern day Greek. Agape would be the
closest translation to the English word love. The Ancient Greeks
used it mean a general affection for people and things. It is the
feeling of love in more general terms. For example, you may say,
"I love the Red Sox," "I love that blouse," or "I just loved that
dinner last night".
Thelema - is love desire in modern Greek. Where agape is the love
of things, thelema is the desire to do some activity or event,
or to love being busy doing a task. For example, you may say,
"I love my job," "I just love playing tennis," or "I love driving that
car." Agape is the love of a noun while thelema is the love of a
verb.
Storge - is love affection in modern Greek. Storge is the natural
affection that is felt by parents for their children. It is a word
exclusively for those in the same family.
Love in the context of the English language is a choice. You
have the will to love or not to love. You may have the thought
of attracting a loving life partner. True love would be the Philia
plus Agape plus Eros to form a relationship. And have the will or
Thelelma to choose to take action or you will not attain a result.
